Second Sight - part 1 of ?

  • Sep. 26th, 2008 at 5:48 PM

Here is my new, old fic. I started writing this a long long time ago. Warning, it is still not finished. I don't know when it will be. But it bit me a while ago, so I'm going to start posting.

Chapter 1

She listened to her newest mix CD, trying hard to block out the bad movie playing on the bus’s televisions.

So, this little fic is an experiment. I was going through a phase where I was re-reading the Harlequin Romances that I adored so as a teenage girl. Something about sardonic, domineering men just revved my engines back then. Now, I yell at the heroine to backhand the boy and go get herself a man who's confident enough to let her be strong.

Well, wouldn't it be a challenge to write a story where the heroine isn't like me -  a bull in a china shop. I've tried to take that 80's romance and make it tolerable. Mary Stewart, our heroine, is a quiet, innocent, NICE girl. Alejandro Manuel Eduardo Marcia de Leon, our hero, is as close to a Spanish-aristocrat-type my imagination could come up with.

Again, this fic is for mature audiences, and again I warn you that some of the attitudes in this are quite 1950's. But it was a challenge. If you stumble on it, let me know if I succeeded!

~Part 1~

The September sun was warm that Saturday morning, and as Mary bounced up the steps to Joe’s apartment building, she enjoyed the moments of relaxation. As a teacher and a grad student, she had very little time to simply enjoy life, but this autumn morning, she and Joe were going to roller-blade down the river drive and forget about teenagers for a while.

~Part 3~

Early Sunday evening found Mary, Joe, and James in Joe’s new private room – he had been moved to a regular floor from ICU – working on the crossword puzzle from the Sunday paper.

“I always do better with this when I have some good vino in my system,” Joe complained.

~Part 5~

Dressing for a nocturnal Halloween cemetery tour was an easy thing to do. It wasn’t as though she and Alejandro were competing for the costume prize, so her rarely-worn black leather pants would serve the joint purpose of warmth and style. Low heeled boots and a thick turtleneck-sweater completed the package. Plugging the dangling, glow-in-the-dark skeletons into her ears, Mary smiled.

~Part 7~

“TGIF, eh, Mar?!” Joe sighed as he caught the train with her that morning.

Mary stomped her feet, trying to get some warmth into them. “You aren’t kidding. And next week is break. Thank goodness!” They were in the subway station, both heading to their respective schools. Winter was giving an advanced screening that morning, and even though they were inside, it was still freezing.

~Part 9~

Alejandro was desperately trying to finish the critique of the paper he was reading, but somehow, he kept hearing Mary’s voice, remembering her scent. The journal had asked for the peer review, and he been glad to be on the review board. But he was having trouble concentrating that Tuesday afternoon.

~Part 11~

There were few social events in that deep winter season; though there was one of great importance. It was the 40th wedding anniversary of Mary’s parents, and Mary and her brothers (and Joe) planned a surprise party for the couple. Even her brother Robbie flew in from Scotland for the bash.

Snowbound - Introduction

  • Aug. 25th, 2008 at 3:43 PM

A few years ago - about 6 - I wrote a short story called Snowbound. This is the story of Beth Bennet, a rock n roll DJ from Philadelphia who happens to get... you guessed it... snowbound with Evan Hill, the lead singer in a band.

The door was locked, as expected, but a search of some of the more obvious locations yielded a key. There was also a very large pile of firewood that she was sure would come in handy.

The cabin was small, with just one fireplace in the living room. “Looks like this really is the living-room, for the duration of our stay, anyway. Umm…  do you know how to start a fire?” She looked hopefully at her snowbound companion.

Beth washed herself slowly, letting the hot water soak the soreness from her muscles and listening for any signs of life from the other room. There were some chords, quickly strummed, and once in a while, she would catch him humming. He had a beautiful voice, with an enviable range. The way he delivered his lyrics always brought such a punch. He was a great entertainer.

“So, Beth. This guy you got snowed in with…” Claire prodded curiously, though her words came out slowly and a bit muddled. The mud on her face was supposed to take all the stress out of her skin and remove months of grime, but it hindered conversation. And from the amount Beth had talked about her snow adventure, Claire knew something had happened. The more Beth talked about a guy, the less serious it was. She held important details to herself like a good hand in poker. And Claire wanted to know if the guy was a royal flush.

One night in July, Beth finished cuing up the last block of commercials when the intercom light blinked. Since the security guards were the only other people in the building, she answered it quickly.

“Ms Bennett? This is Bob at the front desk. There's a visitor who's here for you.”

Eight a.m. came as it always does. Beth woke up, realizing it was later than she usually got up. Then she remembered why. Looking down at the sleeping man next to her, she smiled a secret smile, stretched, and sighed. Though she had very little sleep the night before, she was awake and full of energy. Evan's internal clock was three hours behind her own, so she decided to go out for her normal run.

The warmth and humidity of late summer hung over the city. Beth spent the time as she always had: working, reading, hanging out with family and friends. She acquired a few frequent flyer miles meeting Evan for two very brief visits, but somehow, there was something more special about having him in her home town, in her home. It had been more personal, somehow.

“How does Ahi tuna sound to you? I’m thinking I’ll make a salad – I have sesame seeds at home. And I could make a nice Thai soup. The stall over here always has great fish.”  Evan carried the shopping bags around the market with Beth. They had already stopped at a few stalls in the farmers’ market – a butcher, a baker, and a grocer – and yet the trip was much less of a chore than it had ever been to him. She was obviously having a good time. He looked around the market again, then spied something.

Beth stopped in front of her house, admiring it for a second. It was the first solitude she had had in a few days. Sam had come out for Thanksgiving, and he was staying, nominally to help her put the finishing touches on the house before sale and to help get the stuff into the moving truck. Then, the two of them would head up to their folks’ house for a final farewell before going out to California together – he was kindly storing her things in his garage.

An Intro to My Journal

  • Aug. 25th, 2008 at 11:18 AM

I already have a blog. I also have a facebook account. For someone rapidly approaching 40, a full family and job, that ain't bad, right? I won't be updating this much, and I fully expect no one will read the stuff here.

I'm going to post my fiction, both fanfic and non fanfiction here. Stories will be tagged with the story title.

In my decade or so, I have posted
Lois and Clark fanfic, Buffy fanfic,  and lots of Jane Austen fanfic on a few different pages. But I rarely get the chance to post the long, non fanfic stories I've written. So they're going here.

Hope you do enjoy, and if anyone does read this stuff, drop me a line!
